Mic Phase and Time Alignment Calculator

Convert mic spacing into milliseconds and sample offsets so you know exactly what to nudge before you start guessing.

Half-wavelength cancellation

How the math works

Time offset is distance divided by speed of sound. Once you have the delay in seconds, multiply by sample rate to get the sample offset. Half-wavelength cancellation shows up at speed divided by twice the spacing distance.

When you would use it

  • Align a close snare mic against an overhead pair.
  • Check the timing offset between inside and outside kick mics.
  • Estimate the frequency most likely to cancel when two mics are spaced awkwardly.

FAQ

Why allow room temperature?

Because the speed of sound changes slightly with temperature.

Does sample alignment always sound better?

No. It changes tone and impact, so treat it as an option rather than a default fix.

Why show the cancellation frequency?

It tells you roughly where the biggest comb-filter problem may show up.
