Room Placement and Listening Position Helper

Use the 38% rule, an equilateral monitor triangle, and first-mode estimates to set a sensible starting layout before you measure the room properly.

How the math works

The 38% rule places the listening position at thirty-eight percent of room length from the front wall. Axial room modes use speed of sound divided by twice each room dimension.

When you would use it

  • Work out where to place a desk before you start hanging treatment.
  • Estimate which room dimensions will create the lowest problem resonances.
  • Set a first-pass subwoofer position before you do a crawl or measurement sweep.

These are evidence-based starting points for rectangular rooms, not guaranteed final answers.

FAQ

Why 38% of the room length?

It is a widely used starting point that tends to avoid the worst bass buildup zones.

Why show room modes?

They tell you where low-frequency buildup is likely to be strongest.

Can this replace room measurement software?

No. It helps you start in a smarter place before measuring.
